The star's childhood best friend Nikki Lund opens up her school photo album and tells all about the world's most biggest celebrity
Grinning widely with wire braces on her teeth, it is hard to believe that this dorky teenager would become one of the most famous women in the world.
Kim Kardashian was then just 15 and loved nothing more than larking about with her best friend and top US fashion designer Nikki Lund.
Pulling a funny face as she and Nikki posed for photobooth snaps, the schoolgirl was studious and well behaved.
When she was a teenager she loved the Spice Girls and J-Lo and couldn’t wait to own her own clothes shop.
Kim, 34, rocked up to Paris Fashion Week on Friday with her new blonde locks, but her career as the world’s most famous reality television star only started after the tragic loss of her father.
Top Hollywood lawyer Rob Kardashian – the man who got OJ Simpson acquitted of his murder charge in 1995 – was the parent who made sure Kim lived a normal life and worked hard at school.
Schoolfriend Nikki Lund says Kim was "absolutely heartbroken" when Rob died after losing his battle with oesophageal cancer in 2003.
Nikki recalled: "Kim was a daddy’s girl, she adored her father and when she died she was devastated.
"Rob was the one who would make sure she was working hard and that she was behaving herself. I don't think this whole thing would be happening to her right now if he was still alive.
"She never wanted to be famous, it just kind of happened. She was always the quiet girl sitting in the corner while we were all being loud.
“Rob was a very successful man, he had a great sense of humour – so has Kim and I think that’s where she gets it from. We all loved Rob.
“He guided Kim, he mentored her, he ushered her into womanhood.”
Rob, was married to Kim’s mother Kris Jenner until 1991, and took Kim and her siblings, Kourtney, now 35, Khloe, 30, and Rob Jnr, 27, to church every week.
After their parents split, the children would spend half of the week with Rob in Benedict Canyon near Beverly Hills, and the other with Kris, 59, with then husband and former US Olympic star Bruce Jenner in Malibu.
Nikki, who has known Kim since she was ten, said: “Rob is the one who shaped Kim. When he died it took her a very long time to get over it.
“He was such a good dad. A huge hole has been left but Kim has always been close to Bruce. She sees him as her father now and they get on very well.”
Kim and her mother and sisters have reportedly just signed a £65million deal to make another four series of Keeping Up With the Kardashians.
But the big-bummed beauty is the last person Nikki, has a hit This Is It in the UKcharts, thought would end up being famous – because she was just so “normal”.
Nikki, now 33, explained: “Kim was studious, she wanted to be a good student.
“She worked hard at school, she didn’t get straight A’s but the teachers liked her. She’d never bunk off school.
“Kim was pretty quiet. She was obsessed with Jennifer Lopez, she would sing If You Had My Love all of the time. She thought she was beautiful.
“She also fancied P Diddy and Jamie Foxx – Kim always liked African-American men.”
Nikki, who now runs US fashion label Nikki Rich with former Bon Jovi rocker Richie Sambora, has also partnered up with Hollywood's showbiz svengali Larry Rudolph, who manages Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus to become a brand in her own right.
Talking about her teenager years with Kim, she said they would watch US soap Melrose Place and teen-angst drama My So Called Life, starring Claire Danes, and they would also talk about diets.
Nikki said: “Kim was always on some sort of diet, we all were. She did the no-carbs thing and would ask for a burger with no bun.
“She was conscious of what she looked like, she didn’t have her bum then but the boys liked her. Kim got a lot of attention back then.”
Above all, though, Nikki says Kim is the best friend you can have and that you could “trust her with your life”.
Nikki said: “She was just so normal. We didn’t get into trouble, we didn’t drink or smoke, we just hung out in each other’s bedrooms talking about boys.”
As well as J-Lo, Kim was also obsessed with the Spice Girls and loved to dress up as Victoria Beckham.
Nikki said: “We were a bit dorky really. We loved the Spice Girls, when we were like 15 and 16 and we loved dressing up as them and singing along to their songs. Kim loved Posh Spice, she thought she was the prettiest one and she loved what she wore.
“She went out and bought herself a black leather dress with slits in it – it was exactly like Posh’s.
“Kim would do her make up like Posh’s and her hair was similar so she did actually really look like her.”
Kim and Nikki would hang around with Kimberly Stewart, her brother Sean and at times, even their dad veteran Scots rocker Rod Stewart.
But despite growing up in the playground of the rich and famous, Kim had no desire to be a celebrity.
Kim, who is now worth about £50million, had only two ambitions from an early age – to work in a clothes shop and be a good mum.
Nikki, who will unveil her solo fashion Nikki Lund Clothing at Los Angeles Fashion Week on March 18, explained: “She would have manicures, pedicures, and always made sure her hair looked nice. But she loved clothes.
“When she left school she got a job in a shop called Body in LA’s affluent Encino area. She worked there as a clerk – a shop assistant – and she loved it. She loved being around clothes.”
A savvy businesswoman, she loved sorting out people’s wardrobes and selling their unwanted items on eBay for a 20 per cent commission.
Nikki added: “But she always wanted to be a good mum, she would talk about having children and wanting to care for them.”
Kim’s first serious boyfriend was Beau Dozier, the son of Motown hitmaker Lamont Dozier. They dated throughout high school and got engaged when Kim was 19.
When they split she started dating Jermaine Jackson’s son, Jermaine Jnr, now 38.
During this time Kim got to know Michael Jackson well and struck up a friendship with him during her trips to his Neverland ranch.
Nikki said: “Kim loved Michael. We would often go up to Neverland when she was dating Jermaine and we had so much fun.
“We would see the monkeys, hang out with them, see Michael’s kids, and enjoy what Neverland had to offer. We got to know Michael well too.
“Kim adored him so it was very sad for us when he died. We had some good times with him.”
Kim married rapper Kanye West last year and the couple have a daughter together, 21-month-old North.
Nikki added: “Kim is family, family, family, that is what is most important to her so I don’t think she takes the whole (celebrity) thing so seriously. She works so hard and she is happy, particularly when she is at home with her little girl.
“Kris and Kim are very close, they always have been. Nothing much has changed about Kim, and her relationship with her sisters and parents, except that now – thanks to their TV show – everybody knows all about it.”
